Walking near the water late Sunday afternoon I spotted this female Mallard. Usually, I wouldn’t consider the female Mallard to be so beautiful, but the light against the afternoon sun created beautiful purple and pink colors against the patterns of the blue tones in the water, thus I couldn’t resist doing this painting.

Near Gaylord Michigan as we came over a rise in the hill a vivid scene came into view. It required particularly intense colors that could only be achieved by a more impressionist style than I usually paint. The valley below seemed to spread out in layers of color that contrast and blend simultaneous contrasts such as red/green, blue/orange and yellow/purple. It was late afternoon and the colors were beginning to become muted so that would be the challenge.

Traveling in north Michigan we saw lots of colors. Colors were about 80% this weekend. The beauty of creation in nature never ceases to inspire and awe. I don’t claim to paint exclusively plein-air, however this kind of beauty calls for a lot of direct observation. I’ll hope to post a few more of these works soon.
