Visiting Chichén Itzá was a fascinating and puzzling event. It is surprising to discover how advanced the Mayan civilization had become in the arts and sciences by 800 A.D. and even more surprising to realize that they had abandoned these highly developed and sophisticated architectural sites after 1000 A.D. Even today archaeologists, anthropologists and historians have no clear and compelling theories as to the reasons these beautiful places where abandoned and left in ruins. While we were there in January 2009 we talked to a number of Mayan guides and experts who could not tell us the full reasons. You can read more about it HERE
I’ve tried in this small painting to capture some of the mystery and intrigue I felt while visiting this site. The use of these colors have been influenced by such past artists as Vermeer, Rembrandt and even Chuck Close. It’s a study that I’d like to do as a larger painting sometime in the future.

The two most common fall plantings are alfalfa for an early hay crop in summer and winter wheat, which survives the winter as young seedlings, and mature in early summer the following year. In this painting the young plants in late October are a vivid green and create a unique pattern against the late afternoon sky.
This painting required a bit tighter detail than many of my paintings because of the subject. I’m including a close up detail of part of the painting to show a surprise element of the roof of a house just over the hill barely noticeable in the overall view. I didn’t see it until I started to paint. There is another building in the background peeking out behind the trees, which may take some searching to find as well.

actual size detail - 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 inches is what it should
measure on your screen at 72 dpi.
From an artist’s perspective, the color scheme here is a triple complement. The sky has a blue/orange tone created by the setting sun, while the earth and trees create a red/green and yellow/violet shift in color. The dark shadows in the foreground are viridian green with flecks of red and brown from the still exposed soil. These elements of color as well as the crisscross textures in the foliage are what attracted me to do this painting.

Summer Calm is part of a larger series (12 inches x 16 inches) of Midwest landscapes inspired by the summer and fall light in travels through the Midwest that I’ve painted in addition to my smaller 5’ x 7’ paintings. I’ll post some of these for sale from time to time and make them available on my blog and Daily Painters gallery.

This is a painitng of fall colors from north Michigan. I wanted to do a bit larger than my usual 5″ x 7″ or 6″ x 6″ size so this is the result. The break in the trees created by a service passage created a unique view across the countryside.
