This is a study drawing for the painting of Bighorn Sheep in Glacier National Park.
My philosophy as a painter is that a drawing of this sort is a study for the painting and is not a finished work of art. In this case since I had a lot of detailed studies I pushed the drawing a bit further than I usually do. I’ll be working on the painting in the next few days and will show the results as I get further along. We saw and studied these Bighorn in the evening and continued until it was too dark to work any further.

Bighorn are difficult to spot since their color is well camouflaged into the colors of the mountain except for their light colored rump.

We traveled for almost a month in this area and photographed and painted many images. This was painted in early morning with a view of the Tetons from the east side. I was overwhelmed by the immense space and light of these magnificent mountains.

The door is a powerful symbol of many things in our world. We see new beginnings and new transitions as we enter or go into an unfamiliar place. As I travel around the world the door has much the same meaning in every culture even though we use different words as we describe or speak about it, however in Christian iconography the Door has become a symbol of forgiveness, salvation, transformation and entrance into the eternal.

I found this old door on an Ohio farm building and like many others I’ve painted, it tells it’s own story of the passage of time and change. Parts of it have fallen away and time has weathered and changed its surface. We can speculate as to what has caused all the scars and punctures, but only knowledge of this place and someone who has lived here really knows the whole story. Yet, as artistic form it has its own integrity of meaning woven into the patterns, colors, and textures we can admire and enjoy for what it is in the present.

Magical Moment Into the Thicket: A Fleeing Whitetail Doe

This scene comes from the same part of Ohio where we discovered the “Grey Mares”. We were watching a herd of deer in a field but as I moved closer, one doe sensed me and headed for the thicket. I got a wonderful shot of her just before she entered the woods and later when I saw the photo it brought back this moment I wanted to paint. There was almost a phantom quality about the doe before she disappeared as if she could be perceived but existed only in spirit.

I believe art is about seeing things that bring back feelings and memories, then bringing those things to life in a painting. This is what artistic vision is about so I hope you will enjoy experiencing this new one.

The form of this architecture against sky and earth intrigued me to paint this scene. The way openings in the building led one into and out of the building and the way light and shadow played off the surfaces had a hypnotic effect on me. This painting was done some time ago but I’m updating it and reposting it here in a new format.

This is a larger, more studied painting of a Swan spotted on Kalamazoo River near Concord, Michigan. I’ve taken some time to study the form and habitat of the Mute Swan. Some say they are very aggressive and act as intruders to other waterfowl. I’ve been observing these birds here and haven’t observed this type of behavior.

Here, I’ve tried to capture the texture of water and bird, the mood of the river and was focused on the feel, smell, and sense of this particular time and space.

The Mute Swan was originally a native of northern and central Eurasia, but has now established breeding areas in many North American locations including some in Michigan. This is a Swan I saw near Concord, Michigan. While this painting is sold, I’ll be working on another of the drake of this pair in a future blog so keep watching.

This is one of several pairs of Goldfinches in our backyard. This time of year, just like spring flowers, the finches are in their finest colors. In winter they become a drab color but during mating season the male becomes bright yellow as you see here.
