This is a larger, more studied painting of a Swan spotted on Kalamazoo River near Concord, Michigan. I’ve taken some time to study the form and habitat of the Mute Swan. Some say they are very aggressive and act as intruders to other waterfowl. I’ve been observing these birds here and haven’t observed this type of behavior.

Here, I’ve tried to capture the texture of water and bird, the mood of the river and was focused on the feel, smell, and sense of this particular time and space.

The Mute Swan was originally a native of northern and central Eurasia, but has now established breeding areas in many North American locations including some in Michigan. This is a Swan I saw near Concord, Michigan. While this painting is sold, I’ll be working on another of the drake of this pair in a future blog so keep watching.

This is one of several pairs of Goldfinches in our backyard. This time of year, just like spring flowers, the finches are in their finest colors. In winter they become a drab color but during mating season the male becomes bright yellow as you see here.

This is a reposting of an earlier image. This painting was done from a single apple, just painting it in different positions to create the composition on the mantel. The procession of the four apples across the ledge while still getting the light right demanded a careful study of the light in the actual room and the shadow effects of one apple on another.

I’ve taken a break from posting for a while but am now back working in the studio. These boats suggested opposites or contrasts that set up an interesting composition of shapes and colors. Refelctions always interest me as do the textures and light seen in this view.
