This is an update of an earlier painting. I repainted the color of the pears and focused the light in a new way. From time to time I’ll do a series on canvas rather than board for variety.

The architect Frank Lloyd Wright talked about the value of his childhood Froebel Blocks that influence his sensitivity in designing houses. He reportedly said the Froebel blocks “are in my fingers to this day”. Children’s blocks tell a story about a pet, birthday, house or many other events and objects. The Disney blocks also featured many Disney characters that children from the 1930’s to the present identify with. In addition to all this they are a great way to help children learn the alphabet. They were a great influence on growth and development of many children. While painting them, I’m particularly interested in the colors, shapes, images and textures of these antique objects. They are a great addition to any child’s room or play area.

While attempting to photograph a herd of bison, I was offered a ride in a truck to get closer to the animals. Finding myself bouncing around the back of a pickup truck while taking photos of these massive animals was a bit unnerving when the large bull decided to follow the truck as if he wanted to chase it, especially since the pickup driver said he’d seen these animals jump over a five foot fence when they didn’t want to be restricted. Maybe in a future painting I’ll attempt a view of the bull in defensive or attack mode. This one is a more classic view of this great bull and cow. They can grow to 2,000 lbs and 6.6 feet high. I hope the painting conveys a feeling of the massive size and shape of these beautiful animals.

This was painted in China during the summer of 2008. I often could not post while in China because the government tightly monitors blogs so it was not posted until I returned to USA. It was painted in southeast China then included in my Hillsdale College show in February/March, so I’m reposting it now for you to see.

Berry picking is an age old tradition in families of the past. Some still remember these family outings and some still do it today. This painting is one posted in 2007 and is back from a show, so I’m making it available here for sale once more.
