This is the third jacks painting I’ve done, so it will likely be the last one for a while. I wanted to zoom in for a closer look, and this is what I saw up close. These little jacks are a challenge to draw and paint. People sometimes wonder why I jump around with my subject matter rather than paint the same kinds of subjects all the time as some artists do. I’ve been at this a long time, so I need a challenge to bring me back into the studio every day and I look for the contrast of opposites (simultaneous contrasts) of color, and contrast of light and dark when I’m painting.

That, and I worked for a few years as a technical illustrator in manufacturing industry many years ago, so that has helped with seeing these complicated forms. But most of all, now as a retired professor, I just need a challenge. If it’s not fun I’ll stop doing it.
