Reflections: Snyder Real Estate

Reflections: Snyder Real Estate
16 1/2” x 21 1/4” Acrylic on gessoed board $1,200 with free shipping in USA only

This is another of the images from “ Roots of Reality: East and West” exhibition at Sage Center for the Arts. It’s an image I painted when first thinking about multiple levels of reality in seeing. Here you see the image of a store front but also the reflected image of the building across the street behind the viewer. Then looking more carefully you will see through the window into the store itself to see a heating radiator, light fixtures on the ceiling and even a painting on the wall inside the store. There are really three levels seen here but also the name on the window “ Real Estate” suggests the question which level is“ Real”.

Saturday we were out on Falling Waters Trail again. It was a bit chilly but when we got to a pond near Teft Road, we saw some Canadian Geese fly in. I got a beautiful shot of a drake showing off on the water. The light was gorgeous with partly cloudy afternoon sun. I wasn’t sure I got the movement, but when I got home and looked at the photo, I knew I had to paint it. It’s important for me to get the ambient light just right. For this one I had to adjust the light a bit, but everything else was perfect.

Photography from China by Li Qin

Photography from China by Li Qin

Here’s the poster for my wife, Li Qin’s upcoming senior exhibition in photography opening at Ganton Art Gallery, Spring Arbor University, Sunday April 5. Her show will consist of 21 color photographs taken in China summer 2008.

The show demonstrates state of the art digitally processed museum quality color prints using Photoshop and other techniques to achieve a high quality color image. I remember back in the late 1980’s and 1990’s when I first developed the computer graphics lab at Spring Arbor University, I was dismayed by the level of quality possible in digital imaging and refused to buy a digital camera until the year 2000 as I went back to China to teach.

In the intervening years the possibilities of digital imaging increased to a level where this kind of highly saturated and balanced color photo image can be achieved in the computer lab instead of the darkroom.

Anyone interested in color photography should see this exhibition of photographs to see what can now be achieved. I’m very pleased and proud of the work Li Qin has done in developing the 21 prints in this exhibition. The photos are available for sale, sizes of work in the show range from 9” x 16” to 14” x 18”(print size).

The photos were shot using a Nikon D-80 camera with AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1:35-5.6 G ED lens.

On Tuesday as my wife and I entered Falling Waters Trail in Jackson county for our bike ride, we heard the strange croaking call of Sandhill cranes. I mentioned to her I’d never been close enough to Sandhills to photograph or study them. As if they heard me, we came upon this pair about a mile down the trail. Fortunately I had my telephoto lens and was able to get good photos.

Later looking closely at their red head markings I thought the photos I’d seen before of cranes were slightly different. Further research taught me there is at least six known subspecies of Sandhill cranes. You can read all about it HERE. The strange and beautiful birds standing here in the field gave a sense of otherworldly or primordial presence. The beauty and details demanded a larger format than my usual 5” x 7” size. Here is the result of our encounter. It’s one of my favorite images.

While I don’t usually post larger paintings on this blog, this painting is part of my one-person exhibition titled “Roots of Reality: East and West”, Sage Center for the Arts, Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, Michigan. The exhibition will continue until March 29. You can see the details HERE.

Not far from St. Marks Square in Venice on a lagoon called Bacino Orseolo, gondoliers moor their boats when not in use for a period of time or during the winter. One day in winter, the gondolas were lined up and covered, creating an unusual pattern of shapes, colors, reflections and light. The beauty of these ancient forms added to the composition inspiring me to create this painting.

This is a sequel to “Wild Violets in Full Bloom” and “Wild Violets for Mother’s Day”. March 20, 2009 is just a few days away and the first day of spring this year. Violets are one of the first flowers in our backyard indicating that spring is here and warm weather is just around the corner. Everyone remembers the poem, “Roses are red, Violets are blue, Sugar is sweet, And so are you”, however violets come in many colors including Violet. I’ve painted several violet paintings you can see on my blog by doing a ‘Violet” search including “Violets for Mothers Day”. This one is of purple violets, which is the state flower of my home state of Illinois.

The Mystery of Chichén Itzá: Temple of Kukulkcan

Chichén Itzá: Temple of Kukulkcan

Visiting Chichén Itzá was a fascinating and puzzling event. It is surprising to discover how advanced the Mayan civilization had become in the arts and sciences by 800 A.D. and even more surprising to realize that they had abandoned these highly developed and sophisticated architectural sites after 1000 A.D. Even today archaeologists, anthropologists and historians have no clear and compelling theories as to the reasons these beautiful places where abandoned and left in ruins. While we were there in January 2009 we talked to a number of Mayan guides and experts who could not tell us the full reasons. You can read more about it HERE

I’ve tried in this small painting to capture some of the mystery and intrigue I felt while visiting this site. The use of these colors have been influenced by such past artists as Vermeer, Rembrandt and even Chuck Close. It’s a study that I’d like to do as a larger painting sometime in the future.

When I thought about doing a painting of dominos, I found this vintage set in the toy/game closet. They appear to be made by stamping the pattern and dots in wood blocks. The trademark Halsam® is on the box and I found a lot of these sets being sold on ebay.
