This is a great time of year for clementines. I arranged the three against the complementary color blue for the background and broke open the front one so I could deal with the segments inside.

The great dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi in 1420 should be considered one of the great wonders of the world. It would literally be impossible to build in the same way today. No one could understand how to build such a dome until Brunelleschi devised the idea to use a double shell so that no armature or scaffolding was needed span this immense space.

I’ve sat for hours beneath this great dome at night without tiring of the view of its beautiful surfaces and climbed to the top with my students probably dozens of times. It’s said that it takes 463 steps to the top. This small painting was done as a study for a much larger one but I hope it will give an idea of the power of the great dome that towers to 89.60 meters (approx. 294 feet) over the city of Florence.
