This is another arrangement of antique toy blocks but in a different light and grouping than earlier compositions. Several collectors have asked me to do more of these so I’ll try to do them when I need a break from other ideas I’m working on.

While cleaning my porch I was stung by this little beauty. The nest was hidden behind the window shutters, so I had no warning until she hit me. I wanted to get something of value from the experience so decided to do a painting. Upon close examination the wasp is a beautiful if not a bit alien and scary looking creature. I really enjoyed doing this one.

This plant looks like the red lanterns seen everywhere on the streets of China. I’m always interested in the contrasts of textures, particularly the wood textures in the wall behind the plant. While it does not have a light inside, the Chinese Lantern or Japanese-lantern plant does have a berry inside that has been used for it’s medicinal value but it is said to have some strong side effects so don’t try eating it. It’s an interesting plant that will spread rapidly once it has taken root. You can see the small berry inside below.

Secured: Old Town Door and Lock

Secured: Old Town Door and Lock
6” x 8” (15.24cm x 20.32cm) acrylic painting on canvas panel
SOLD

Some of the steps in the process of painting this below.

I used a colored ground to establish the tones and mood of the painting, then began to build up the contrasting colors in the metal textures. At this point I like to determine the brightest lights and darkest darks. Finally I work to give the feeling of the textures in the wood and metal to create contrast and tactile surface textures.

This is the third painting on my new larger canvas panels. This view is from a house in the old town in the city of Jai Xing, China about two hours drive from Shanghai. The old town is now mostly a tourist area but the canals and streets are all much like those in the city of Venice, Italy with no auto or motorized traffic and sidewalks on either side of the canals. Much of the architecture is restored but there is a lot of ancient woodwork in the doorways and windows of these old houses so I couldn’t resist painting the beauty of this old doorway.

I must also tell you that even though I’m using canvas panels on these paintings, they are still provided with a 1/2 inch edge (as shown below) so you can hang them as soon as you get them without a frame, or frame them as you like. Each painting comes with a signed certificate of authenticity attached to the back of the painting.
