This is the second work on my new larger canvas panels. I’ll continue to do more works on this surface but will also mix in some of the 5″ x 7″ works on gessoed boards as well. I like each surface for different reasons depending on the subject.

Some say Feng Shui is magical, designed to ward off evil spirits, while others say it is used to direct the “Chi” or energy into and through buildings and spaces. Either way it is an ancient practice that directs the design and orientation of many ancient traditional buildings and has influenced the design of beautiful forms such as those in temples and pagodas.

While it may seem that this painting comes from a barn door in the American Midwest, I actually found it in a Buddhist temple high in a Chinese tea mountain where friendly Buddhist nuns were chanting prayers. The nuns gave us a tour of the temple and grounds and even showed us where some roof tiles had fallen and been repaired from the May 12 earthquake.
I suppose it goes to show that we live in a small world and people and ideas can be similar wherever one goes.

Jinsha Historical Site: Chengdu, China

While in Chengdu, China we visited the Jinsha archaeological site. It’s an amazing dig that was discovered in 2001 in a suburb of Chengdu. The site is from a civilization that lived more than 3000 years ago but left no written history that we know about although it appears to be extremely advanced for that time period. You can read more about it here and here.
The sun disk below is one of the most beautiful finds. The actual sun disk is less than six inches in diameter.

Sunbird golden disk

Below are some other photos we took at the site with explaination below.

1. This golden disk is of the sun with a bird flying around it.
2. This is a mask of very thin gold.
3. Third is a bronze sculpture of a man.
4. A photo of the site where the objects were found now a museum.
5. A tiger carved from stone.
6. This is a bird carved from jade.

Back in Michigan

I’m back in Michigan and will be in my studio finishing some ideas from travels in China but also will be posting other work that some of you have ask me to do. It was a long and stimulating two months in China, even though some of it was sobering because of the devastation caused by the earthquake near Chengdu. My wife is still in Chengdu and says she just felt another tremor last night. These tremors seem to still come every few days even though they usually don’t cause damage like the original quake of May 12, but still they can be unsettling.
