When I was in fourth and fifth grade, there was a kid a year ahead of me who was always drawing cartoons. He could draw all the Mickey Mouse characters very quickly and I thought he was cool. A few years ago we were visiting relatives in Central Illinois where I grew up and we toured a beautiful new house being built by this same guy’s construction company. When I introduced myself to him again after all these years, those Mickey Mouse cartoons he used to draw popped into my head. It’s interesting what associations we have with people from our past.

Kids toys are always interesting to paint, so after updating the toy blocks on Saturday, I had this set of old blocks on the shelf in my studio. I arranged two different setups and decided to paint both. This is the first one with four blocks arranged with the light coming in the window. I liked playing with the shadows and highlights and the contrasts of color. This one was sold before it was posted. I’ll post another for sale in a day or two.

This is an update on an earlier painting done January 2007. From time to time I’ll bring an earlier painting up again when I haven’t finished a new one. A big part of painting is learning to see form and color, and enjoying the beauty of visual form whatever it is. Painting these antique child’s blocks was fun studying color and light contrasts. Part of the enjoyment was duplicating the early Minnie Mouse image stamped into the toy wood block.

Immanuel Kant said we can never know the real object but only our sense perceptions of it. When I paint something I’m attempting to know as much as I can about the form of the object, but I usually realize that the final painting becomes a description of what my senses perceived as I was painting. A lot depends on the time, place and space in which I’m painting.

As I painted this old telephone line insulator I was reminded of St. Paul’s famous statement about “seeing through a glass darkly” and was intrigued by the way light refracts, bends, twists, and turns as it goes through a glass object. The result of this painting is my perceptions of the wonders and magic of how we see.

These “Raspberries” were painted in July at the same time the “Berry Pickling” painting was done, but I’m just now getting it posted since it has been showing in several other places. A friend photographed these in the woods behind my house which inspired me to set up a still life and do several paintings.

Traveling in north Michigan we saw lots of colors. Colors were about 80% this weekend. The beauty of creation in nature never ceases to inspire and awe. I don’t claim to paint exclusively plein-air, however this kind of beauty calls for a lot of direct observation. I’ll hope to post a few more of these works soon.

Venetian Transformation 20” x 51” acrylic on gessoed Masonite® Not For Sale

This weekend we were up north in Michigan to see the beginning of the fall colors and to visit with friends who own one of my paintings. The painting Venetian Transformation is a collage of images from Venice, Italy. There are three panels with parts of the painting actually extending out three dimensionally from the surface. The masked figure, the arches, and the gondola are cut outs, which protrude from the base surface of the painting and the center doorway panel sets out about 1/2 inch from the side panels. The painting is featured in the entry foyer wall of their home on Grand Lake with a wonderful view of the water.

They are both artistic people, he in drawing and painting and she with fabric. It was a great relaxing weekend. The photo collage below shows a glimpse of the painting and the surroundings.
