Wild Violets: A Viewer's Story

A small painting is a simple thing, yet it can touch places in ones being in ways that nothing else can. The following is an elegant story by a viewer related to a painting I created May 2007. I thought this may help to explain one reason daily painters continue to do these small works.

The painting:
Wild Violets for Mother's Day

Not for Sale: painting sold May 2007

The story:
Dear Mr. Wolber,

Tonight, while searching for a picture of wild violets, I came upon your beautiful painting Wild Violets for Mother's Day. Although I never write e-mails to strangers, I felt compelled to write to you and tell you how much your painting touched my heart and provided me with comfort. As a child, a field of wild violets grew in my grandparents front lawn. Every time I would visit my grandparents during the spring and summer, I would always pick my grandmother a bouquet of wild violets. I use to slink into the house with a bunch hidden behind my back, and tell my grandmother to close her eyes for a surprise. Even though she knew what was hidden behind me, she always played along. A smile would always be across her face when I handed her her present, and the wild violets would go right into a shot glass filled with water. There they would sit until they were bent over and dying or until the next time I would visit and pick a new bouquet. This tradition went on for many years. Twenty five in fact. However, this year, my grandmother was not able to get her bouquets of wild violets. After a long battle with many illnesses, she passed away before the wild violets had a chance to bloom. Many nights since she passed, I catch myself missing her terribly. Tonight was one of those nights and it was such a comfort to come across your painting and see the wild violets again. You captured their beauty and simplicity wonderfully. Every time I come across your painting, I will think of my grandmother and the wonderful bond we shared. Thank you for painting this picture. Although I am sure you have touched the lives of many people with your art, tonight you have touched mine.

Thank you again,
S. Bryan
When I came home from a visit to the optometrist’s office I took another look and decided to do a painting. Since I’d painted the duet of apples recently I chose to do this one in a similar setting and because I like to do paintings in a series of three maybe I’ll do a third later but I don’t know how I’ll set that one up. I’ll have to think about it.
The title “Behind Locked Doors” has been the subject of film, novel and poem for decades. The mystery and intrigue of the unknown or undisclosed continues to be front-page news even today. This image and theme seems to me both ancient and modern in its appearance and content. The elegance and grace of the door attracted me to create this painting.
This is the finished painting of the step-by-step work in progress. The four stages are shown below.

I still work with the idea that Form, meaning the design elements such as mass, volume, light and dark, color, etc. are the most important concepts that the artist has to work with. Subject, of course, is important, but the way the artist uses the form elements interprets the subject and gives it meaning and expression. The exciting part for me is seeing the form emerge in the work so this is why I sometimes like to show these step-by-step sequences. I hope you enjoy seeing it as well.
At this third step I've found my lights and darks and now am beginning to work on the middle tones. I still have some modeling of form to work out and most of the background areas to finish laying in. At this point I have a pretty good idea how the composition and color is going to work out, now it's just a matter of laying in the unfinished areas and bringing everything together.
I’ve decided to do this one as another step-by-step process painting. I’m using a dark green colored ground again for this painting but it could have been another color to set a different ambient light tone. If you look carefully at the contour drawing below you will see I’ve used a bit of colored pencil to help me choose the colors I’ll put down in each area.

The drawing for these small paintings is never intended as a finished work by itself, if it were I wouldn’t want to go on and finish the painting but rather leave the drawing for you to enjoy.

I don’t usually use black but have recently been mixing my dark shadow color using phthalocyanine green, dioxazine purple and naphtol red. While the digital image doesn’t show the true saturation of the colors, the scanned images are close enough to get a good idea of what’s happening in the work. If anyone has questions, I’ll be glad to try to answer them.
There is always something a bit mysterious about old doorways or windows especially if it’s in an old abandoned barn or house. This one had a nest just inside the window and I was curious about the broken glass that looked a little like the form of a bird.
I think the Canadian goose has a regal bearing. When I do a painting of a new subject for me, I can spend a lot of time researching the subject. In this case, I’ve seen a lot of Canadian’s but I really hadn’t looked that closely. Fortunately, the digital camera allows one to take many photos, then discard those that are not helpful and no extra cost except that of my time. I must have taken 100 or more photos before I was able to put together this composition. I really found this pair a fascinating subject.
