This bowl was sitting on the kitchen counter and I kept looking without thinking about doing a painting.

When I came home from a visit to the optometrist’s office I took another look and decided to do a painting. Since I’d painted the duet of apples recently I chose to do this one in a similar setting and because I like to do paintings in a series of three maybe I’ll do a third later but I don’t know how I’ll set that one up. I’ll have to think about it.

It's again that time of year for wildflowers to begin showing up. Here's another small child's bouquet for Mother's Day. This one has been created using the complementary colors of yellow/purple in the flowers and in the background tones.

Behind Closed Doors: Asian Door Latch

The title “Behind Locked Doors” has been the subject of film, novel and poem for decades. The mystery and intrigue of the unknown or undisclosed continues to be front-page news even today. This image and theme seems to me both ancient and modern in its appearance and content. The elegance and grace of the door attracted me to create this painting.

Green Apples Duet: A Step by Step Demo

Green Apples Duet: Step by Step Process is Finished
6in. x 6in. (15.2cm x 15.2cm) acrylic on gesso primed board
SOLD

This is the finished painting of the step-by-step work in progress. The four stages are shown below.

I still work with the idea that Form, meaning the design elements such as mass, volume, light and dark, color, etc. are the most important concepts that the artist has to work with. Subject, of course, is important, but the way the artist uses the form elements interprets the subject and gives it meaning and expression. The exciting part for me is seeing the form emerge in the work so this is why I sometimes like to show these step-by-step sequences. I hope you enjoy seeing it as well.

In the previous two postings below you can see what I said about the beginning stages.

Green Apples: A step-by-step demo (Third Step)

Green Apples: A step-by-step demo Steps 1, 2 & 3
6in. x 6in. (15.2cm x 15.2cm) acrylic on gesso primed board
THIS IS AN UNFINISHED WORK IN PROGRESS
I'll post the finished work next time.

At this third step I've found my lights and darks and now am beginning to work on the middle tones. I still have some modeling of form to work out and most of the background areas to finish laying in. At this point I have a pretty good idea how the composition and color is going to work out, now it's just a matter of laying in the unfinished areas and bringing everything together.

Below you can see what I said about the beginning two stages.

Green Apples: A step-by-step demo

Green Apples: A step-by-step demo Steps 1 & 2
6in. x 6in. (15.2cm x 15.2cm) acrylic on gesso primed board
THIS IS AN UNFINISHED WORK IN PROGRESS
I'll post next steps as I progress to the finished work.

I’ve decided to do this one as another step-by-step process painting. I’m using a dark green colored ground again for this painting but it could have been another color to set a different ambient light tone. If you look carefully at the contour drawing below you will see I’ve used a bit of colored pencil to help me choose the colors I’ll put down in each area.

The drawing for these small paintings is never intended as a finished work by itself, if it were I wouldn’t want to go on and finish the painting but rather leave the drawing for you to enjoy.

I don’t usually use black but have recently been mixing my dark shadow color using phthalocyanine green, dioxazine purple and naphtol red. While the digital image doesn’t show the true saturation of the colors, the scanned images are close enough to get a good idea of what’s happening in the work. If anyone has questions, I’ll be glad to try to answer them.

There is always something a bit mysterious about old doorways or windows especially if it’s in an old abandoned barn or house. This one had a nest just inside the window and I was curious about the broken glass that looked a little like the form of a bird.

I think the Canadian goose has a regal bearing. When I do a painting of a new subject for me, I can spend a lot of time researching the subject. In this case, I’ve seen a lot of Canadian’s but I really hadn’t looked that closely. Fortunately, the digital camera allows one to take many photos, then discard those that are not helpful and no extra cost except that of my time. I must have taken 100 or more photos before I was able to put together this composition. I really found this pair a fascinating subject.

I’ve been seeing more of these birds recently. I know they are around most of the year, but for some reason there have been a lot of them in the back yard this week, so I got some shots with my wife’s new telephoto lens. There is a pond behind our house that has been flooded this week so that may be why they are coming in.

Sunday Afternoon in the Park: Female Mallard

Walking near the water late Sunday afternoon I spotted this female Mallard. Usually, I wouldn’t consider the female Mallard to be so beautiful, but the light against the afternoon sun created beautiful purple and pink colors against the patterns of the blue tones in the water, thus I couldn’t resist doing this painting.
